A few days ago I ran into a girl and her husband that I have not seen in 17 years. Be as that may, I will never forget them:

In 1992 I was asked to play to piano for a large church in the Gainesville GA area. The regular pianist was sick and would be out for several months. During that time, the above-mentioned couple decided to get married in the chuch sometime that fall. So, the time drew near for their wedding date.

About two weeks before the set date, I walked into the church one Sunday morning and saw the bride-to-be's mother handing out little flyers to everyone...including myself. Well, I did not pay it any attention and just folded it up and stuck it in my pocket. When I finally got to the piano, I looked around and saw everyone really looking at it.. and I mean really looking at it.

So I opened mine and discovered that this mother-in-law-to-be was unhappy at her daughter's choice of a husband and had decided to putting the wedding to a stop. She had printed up flyers telling people not to come to the wedding and wanting the pastor not to marry them.

It seems (from talking to some other of her family members) that she was one the type that believes parents should arrange marriages for their daughters (although not their sons...I am not sure why this difference) and she did not like this guy and determined they were not getting married.

Well, I decided to go to the wedding and it went off fairly normal. Although the irate mother did not show up. The girl's father did however I noticed.

Have you ever seen any thing like this at a wedding?

No wonder it was "unforgettable".

How sad that a Mother would do something like that.

Apparently it didn't ruin either the wedding or the marriage. Good for them.

Yes.

There are many mentally sick people out there, we just refuse to acknowledge it because they behave 'normally' most of the time.

Yikes!

I bet that woman never got to see her grandchildren.

People are going to do what they're going to do, and you can't make them change if they don't want to.

A person can give advice once but then needs to shut up and show up on time for the wedding so as to not disrupt it, or stay home.

Theres nothing worse than a controlling, manipulative mother. I wonder if the husband got into trouble for being there.

Dh's oldest brother asked us not to attend his oldest son's first wedding. It lasted about 10 years with BIL & SIL inserting their views into the marriage. Their son is remarried.

My uncle refused to come to my wedding because he was mad at my parents.

My sister refused to come to my wedding because she was mad at my parents.

My DH's brother refused to come to my wedding because he was mad at his (DH's) sisters.

My DH's mother refused to come to my bridal showers or the rehearsal dinner or to be in any photos because we'd invited DH's father to the wedding (they divorced 31 years earlier, by the way.)

.... and people wonder why we no longer have anything to do with either of our families!

I've heard in situations like this, invite everyone and let them work it out whether they will come or not. Sounds like that's what you did.

Good for you for being Pivot Parents... you let God change you and change the direction your family is going. I bet your kids' weddings will have no drama (except maybe grandparents or grand-aunts and -uncles).

We've already told our daughter to plan her wedding any way she likes - we'll write the checks and be there dressed to the 9s. No drama. If we don't like the guy, we'll advise her and then let it go - she's the one who has to live with him, and who knows what God is doing. No boycott.

No, never experienced anything like that. Sad. There are already enough emotions running high at a wedding, why bring in all the drama? I don't understand people some times...

Edited to add: EXCEPT when my half-sister (share a dad, different moms) got married, her mom was upset about something and declared that at the wedding she would tell our dad that he was not really my sister's biological dad. Which could've been shocking except that her mom and our dad are both caucasian. And my half-sister is clearly half black, lol. Um, DUH, of course our dad isn't her biological dad! Dad actually laughed when my sister told him about it, poor girl was worried that it would ruin the wedding and my dad reassured her and said no matter what her mom did, the wedding would be beautiful. And it was Her mom was in a good mood, and participated without telling any family "secrets" lol.

I agree, invite people and if they chose not to come they are usually the ones that lose out!

We divorced before my DS2 got married or before DS1 had kids. I am extremely glad that both kids did just that. They invited both of us to attend/participate in their lives.

At DS2's wedding he asked both his father and I to walk him down the isle - Ex refused to if I was going to. Ex lost out on the only chance he would ever have to do that for his son - his big loss. I have a beautiful picture on my mantel of DS2 and I smiling at each other as we walked down the isle.

When the grandchildren were born Ex refused to stay for the baptisim dinner for either grandchild, or come to his grandson's first birthday party because I would be there. For the birthday party I had told DS1 that I would come another time if he wanted his Dad to be there - DS said no, we were both invited, if one of us did not want to be there it was their loss. The Ex lost out (he died before the 1st birthday of the second grandchild). I could never understand it, I would never have missed out on such special occasions, good heavens it's not that hard to be civil for a couple hours is it? After all, it's not "all about you", it's all about them, or at least should be .

Holy drama! It is one thing to not go to the wedding. It is another all together to try and stop the wedding. Why bother? Sheesh!

And no, I have never seen anything like that. Drama? oh yes. That kind of drama, not so much.

My mom's father & step-mother refused to come to my wedding because they didn't like my step-father (because he and my mother had confronted them on their adulterous relationship with each other while they were married to their spouses who were in nursing homes, a whole other story). I was my grandfather's only grandchild and he missed it, and it was his own fault.

Your son is a winner, and I can see where he got it from. You rock, HSG!

Thank you Deermousie.

I always felt bad about the way their Dad was after the divorce, and could just never understand it. I feel very sorry for people that cut themselves off from family, their own or as in-laws. I have always just wanted to "gather them in" and have more family out of it (I figure I not only got DIL's but their parents and siblings as part of my extended family too )!! I do understand that there are toxic people and that you can not always accept everyone in as family, but to me it is very sad when that is the case.

That is just terrible!!!

A girl I used to babysit for grew up in the church but after high school she started making some really bad decisions. Her parents really didn't like her boyfriend. I don't think he treated her well. When they decided to get married, the parents sat her down and explained why they didn't approve. But, they left it up to her, afterall she was an adult. She didn't invite them to the wedding. They went anyway, to show support for their daughter and her new husband. It had to kill them to watch their daughter make what they saw as a terrible decision! Sure enough, a few years later the marriage fell apart. The parents were there to help their daughter pick up the pieces. So no "boycot" there!

Hurray for them! They did it right, inspite of their great disappointment, I'm sure.

My father threatened to (because I wasn't using the 'correct' minister to get married). I cried. Someone talked sense into him. He came (as did my divorced grandparents who hadn't seen each other in 40 years..they were cordial).

When my brother got married back in '97, his wife's mother and step-father decided not to come to the wedding because of my brother's race (the step dad is a touch racist ). Needless to say they weren't really missed...her dad and step-mom were great fun.

I am truly amazed that so many parents are willing to miss out on such a big day in their children's life. I simply could not ever imagine doing so, and I am sad for those of you that had family that put even a small damper on the day for you.
